Bentiu Police tortured a journalist it kept in detention during two weeks without charges and confiscated his equipment after releasing him yesterday.

Bonifacio Taban, a free lancer journalist working for a Bentiu radio station and Sudanvote website, was detained on April 24 after he took pictures of people shot dead during clashes between supporters of independent candidate Angelina Teny and the Police.

Mr. Taban told SCR News over a very poor telephone connection that security agents did not allow him to sleep during the first night, beat him up during interrogation and threw cold water over his body.

Mr. Taban was released yesterday and asked to be back at the police station this morning to close the case.

He said the security told him he was a free man but refused to give him back his camera and the recorder.

Mr. Taban said he is feeling very weak after two weeks of detention in very difficult conditions.

He added that during the first five hours of detention he was held at a secret location and his family was desperate to trace his whereabouts.

Mr. Taban, 29, is married and has a daughter.

He said he intends to carry on working as a journalist in another state.

Mr. Taban added he does not feel safe in Unity State.
