Bentiu Police, in Unity State, is keeping a free-lancer journalist under detention without charges for the last two weeks.
Taban Bonifacio, a free-lancer reporting for the website Sudanvote was arrested on April 23 allegedly for taking photographs of Unity State elections violence.Mr. Taban has remained under police custody ever since in Bentiu without being charged or presented to court.
Agency for Independent Media (AIM) chief executive, David de Dau, confirmed this morning to SCR News over the phone that Mr. Taban remains in custody two weeks after he was arrested.
He added that UNMIS officers visited today Mr. Taban in prison.
Mr. Dau said AIM launched an appeal directed to the authorities in South Sudan and to the diplomatic corps to assist in the release of Mr. Taban.
AIM also appealed to Unity State Governor-elect, Taban Deng Gai, to reconsider the arrest of the free-lances journalist.
So far the authorities in Bentiu failed to answer AIM’s efforts in order to secure Mr. Taban’s immediate release from detention.
