Leaders of the Kenyan churches abandoned talks with the government over the draft Constitution accusing the authorities of insincerity.

The Church leaders said they will instruct Christians to vote NO when the new Constitution is put to a referendum later in the year.

Christian leaders expressed concern that the basic law failed to protect the unborn, gives legal status to Kadhi Islamic courts and exempts Muslims from the Bill of Rights.

They added that the new law failed to separate State and religion.

Bishop Philip Sulumeti, Deputy Chairman of the Kenya Catholic Episcopal Conference, said the Kibaki government was unable to provide any satisfactory solutions to address the concerns of the members of the Church.

Kenya’s Anglican bishops said in a statement last week the draft constitution is not the solution to Kenya’s many problems and its adoption will not bring an automatic change for the better.
