An Eastern Equatoria state minister has defected from the National Congress Party to join the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement.

Maurice Merisiya Kaunda, state minister for Physical Infrastructure, announced his defection yesterday, Emmanuel Radio reported.

He told the press that he submitted a letter of resignation to the NCP leadership in Khartoum and an application to the SPLM.

Mr. Kaunda confessed that as a southerner, he needed to resign from the NCP to be able to help people to make a wise choice at the referendum on self-determination.

The defecting politician predicted that South Sudan will smoothly sail to freedom under the leadership of President-elect Salva Kiir Mayardit.

He urges southerners to forget the past, join hands together and forge the way forward to the independence.

Mr. Kaunda joined the Salvation government in 1990 and the NCP in 2001.
