UN Security Council yesterday extended for another year its mission in Sudan and added to its mandate full support to the referendum on self-determination due in January 2011.
The UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) deployed close to 10,000 troops, including 470 military observers, to monitor the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
The council asked UNMIS to prepare a plan to support the referenda, taking into account the lessons learned during the elections process.
It called on UNMIS to make full use of its authority and capabilities to protect civilians, relief and development workers and refugee.
