President-elect Omar Hassan al-Bashir yesterday promised to hold the referendum for southern self determination on time.

Mr. al-Bashir was speaking on state television soon after the National Elections Commission announced his victory.

He said the Sudanese people have achieved a moral victory before the eyes of the world in a civilized, high class and shared manner.

Mr. al-Bashir said the referendum on South Sudan self-determination should be held as scheduled.

The president-elect won 68 percent of the presidential vote, with almost seven million votes.

SPLM candidate Yasser Arman was second with over two million votes, representing almost 22 percent of the total although he boycotted the race.
