The White House said yesterday that the Sudanese elections were plagued by serious irregularities and expressed its commitment to helping ensure the 2011 referendum on southern Sudanese independence is conducted and respected.
The White House said in a statement that the political rights and freedoms were circumscribed throughout the electoral process, and there were reports of intimidation in South Sudan. The statement added that the ongoing conflict in Darfur did not permit an environment conducive to acceptable elections.
The U.S. regrets that the National Elections Commission did not do more to prevent and address such problems prior to voting.
The statement concluded saying the U.S. administration is committed that the referendum takes place on time and its outcome respected.
