Security operatives in Eastern Equatoria state claimed to have outwitted an attempted vote rigging operation in Torit on Sunday.
Eastern Equatoria state caretaker governor, Johnson Juma Okot, told the press that armed soldiers cordoned off a warehouse where ballot boxed were processed to foil a plot by an undercover group to steal votes.State Election High Committee officials yesterday suspended data entry activity at the warehouse following what they claimed an attack by armed men on the Rub-Hall.
Mr. Okot said security officers held some meetings to analyze the incident and discovered that there was a communication gap between the army and the High Elections Committee over the attempted fraud.
The caretaker governor did not disclose the particulars of the group he claimed wanted to rig the polls by intercepting the boxes.
Mr. Okot said the action of the security forces was not an attack to intimidate the Election High Committee officials as it as reported.
Eastern Equatoria state High Elections Committee chairman, Mr. Joseph Ojuku said his workers were traumatized by the intervention of armed security operatives Sunday evening.
He added that the security took three officials for questioning and they were allegedly detained for one and half hours.
