The Catholic Bishop of Yambio praised voters of Western Equatoria for the peaceful manner in which the elections were conducted so far in the State.

Bishop Edward Hiiboro Kussala told SCR News over the phone that elections in Eastern Equatoria have been peaceful.

Bishop Hiiboro added that people were smiling and laughing while voting.

The bishop of Yambio pointed out there were problems related to the arrangements for the elections like confusion with voters’ lists and ballots.

He added that it is understandable because there were no elections in the South for a long time.

Bishop Hiiboro said he was informed that the military wanted to intervene in some voting centres against the elections law which only allows police agents in polling stations.

He expressed concern about how candidates and supporters will react when the final results are announced, fearing some outbreak of fighting.

Bishop Hiiboro said the church leaders met with the candidates for governor on Easter Monday and urged them to accept the outcome of the elections without violence.

Bishop Hiiboro said he voted on Monday.

The diocese of Tambura-Yambio prepared in November a pastoral plan to preserve the peace during and after the elections.
