The president of South Sudan cast his ballot early this morning in the first multi-party elections in 24 years making him the first voter in south Sudan after waiting over half an hour until the polling station was set up.
Salva Kiir Mayardit told the press after casting his votes that like many Sudanese this was the first time he voted.
He added the elections should represent the foundations of democracy in the country and the peaceful transfer of power.
President Kiir was escorted by a number of government officials.
GoSS minister for Roads and Transport, Anthony Makana, said the voting is an important exercise for the people of south Sudan to choose their leaders.
He said it was also his first time to vote.
Voters have until Tuesday to cast their ballots and choose the leaders they want to govern or represent them in the national, regional and state assemblies.
