UN TRAINS OVER 650 POLICE TO SECURE ELECTIONS

The United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) has trained 656 police officers to provide security during the election period in Eastern Equatoria.

The police officers commissioned on Saturday at Torit Technical Institute comprised of 166 women and 399 men.
Among the disciplines the SSPS were trained for, are elections securing, community policing, supervisory, Specialized Persons Unit, gender based violence and child protection.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, UNMIS Police Sector Commander, Jessica Orodriyo, viewed the training as professionalizing the South Sudan Police Service (SSPS) and making it a democratic force.
Orodriyo pledged that the UN will continue to support SSPS, as a partner in the implementation process of Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
Meanwhile, the training coordinator, Sifiso Mpafu, said the activity symbolizes one of the greatest milestones in UNMIS mandates to South Sudan Police Service.
He added that the SSPS Officers underwent capacity building to equip them with knowledge, skills and attitudes for competent discharge of their duties.
