Most opposition parties announced last night that they are pulling out from the elections citing insecurity and rigging as the main reasons for the boycott.

Farouq Abu Eissa, the spokesman for the opposition, said the parties that form the consensus decided to boycott the presidential, parliamentary and governors elections.

Umma’s spokeswoman, Mariam al-Mahdi, said the parties decided to reject and boycott the incomplete and distorted elections.

She added that nine presidential candidates met yesterday and most of them decided they will withdraw from the presidential race.

Al Umma Reform and Renewal party presidential candidate Mubarak al-Fadil confirmed the decision.

The SPLM announced Wednesday that its candidate Yasser Arman would not contest the elections while the party withdraws its candidates from legislative post in the Darfur.

Hassan al-Turabi, the leader of the Popular Congress Party, said they would take part in the elections.

The boycott is not binding because the time for withdrawing nominations expired on February 12 and any vote on candidates that pulled out of the race counts all the same.
