Sudan People’s Liberation Movement is committed to the elections and it is unlikely that it will boycott or support its postponement.
SPLM Deputy Chairman Riek Machar headed a four-man delegation to Khartoum to mediate talks between the opposition and the NCP regarding the postponement of the elections to November and other related issues. The delegation returned this morning to Juba to brief the SPLM Political Bureau.
Asked if the SPLM would boycott the elections in the north, Dr. Machar said it was unlikely.
Dr. Machar said the petition was presented by the opposition parties and the SPLM did not subscribe it.
The SPLM delegation wanted to find a solution for the issues concerning free and fair elections by facilitating dialogue between the opposition parties and the NCP to charter a way out for the problems raised.
Dr. Machar added that the postponement of the elections would be unlikely taking into account, as he put it, the circumstances in Khartoum.
The SPLM political bureau met this afternoon to disclose its official position about the petition presented by the opposition to the presidency.
