US special envoy to Sudan, Scott Gration, yesterday acknowledged problems with preparations for the April vote, Reuters reported.
However Mr. Gration said elections should still occur on time so that democratic structures are put in place to carry out the 2011 referenda on self-determination for Southern Sudan and Abyei.
Mr. Gartion revealed that the US administration is prepared for any eventual secession vote and it is working to resolve contentious issues hoping to avoid the return to war.
The US envoy to the Sudan said the elections, even if flawed, will mark a step toward establishing voter rolls, electoral authorities and monitors that will strengthen political decision-making.
