The bishops of Sudan asked the Pope to establish new catholic dioceses in the country to be able to cater for the pastoral needs of such a vast territory.

Bishop Caesar Mazzolari told Good News Radio that during their meeting with the pope last week the bishops of the Sudan exposed the reality of poverty in country.

He added that the bishops told Pope Benedict that having only nine dioceses in such an immense country was a great limitation to evangelize the people.

Bishop Mazzolari said the work of the Church in fostering peace in Sudan was appreciated by the various offices at the Vatican.

He reminded that the Pope urged the leaders of the Church in Sudan to continue advocating for “No return to war” while exhorting Catholics to inter into a dialogue of life with Muslims and followers of traditional religions.

Bishop Mazzolari made these statements after his return from the ad limina visit to the Vatican together with the other bishops and heads of diocese in the Sudan.
