The SPLM yesterday accused Khartoum of trying to twist national elections by asking the northern army to transport ballot papers to south Sudan.

The United Nations was due to transport the ballots by helicopter to polling stations in the South but the authorities have delayed the pilots’ visas, AFP reported.

Yasir Arman, SPLM candidate for the presidency of the republic, said the NCP is sabotaging the coming of the UN pilots so that they control the whole election process.

Mr. Arman said Mr. al-Bashir’s deputy, Ali Osman Mohamed Taha, asked Salva Kiir Mayardit to allow SAF troops to transport the ballots by air to and around the south.

Mr. Kiir declined to accept the proposal.

The head of the National Elections Commission, Abel Alier, wrote a letter to Mr. Kiir with the same request.
