UNICEF is calling for improved access to safe drinking water across the Sudan during yesterday’s International World Water Day celebration.

Data from the 2006 Sudan Household Health Survey shows that about 40 per cent of the population does not have access to safe drinking water and more than two-thirds do not have adequate sanitation.

Nils Kastberg, UNICEF’s Representative in Sudan, said the UN agency for the infancy needs to continue investing so that everybody has access to safe drinking water to save the lives of thousands of children across the country every year.

Mr Kastberg added that each year around 305 thousand children die from preventable illnesses in Sudan and one of the big killers is diarrhoea from unsafe water and poor sanitation.
