Over 45 women lawyers are meeting in a two-day workshop to form a Southern Sudan Women Lawyers Association with a view to solve women’s challenges and defend their rights.

The workshop taking place in a Juba hotel is organized by GoSS Ministry of Legal Affairs and Constitutional Development in collaboration with UNDP.

Talking to SCR News, Philberto Mayot Marang, prosecutor general in the Ministry of Legal Affairs and Constitutional Development said the workshop will discuss issues related to the legal status of women.

Mr. Marang added that the association of Women Lawyers will play a big role in uplifting women rights and interests.

He added that women lawyers have an important role in society due to their exhaustive knowledge of law.

Asha Arabi, UNDP Gender Advisor, said the association will increase the number of women lawyers in South Sudan.

Ms. Arabi mentioned that with enough information regarding the status of women in South Sudan, UNDP will ensure that the association will conduct and establish research in the development of law.

The association will also be used to promote equal rights and human rights by being able to contribute to conflict resolution and peace building through the participation of women.
