Increasing cases of firearms related violence in Eastern Equatoria state have prompted women organizations to demand for tough measures against small arms in the hands of individuals.

Mrs. Dinah Disan is the coordinator of Coalition for Women Organizations in Eastern Equatoria state and also a member of Southern Sudan Action Network on Small Arms.

She urged the government to set strict rules to protect against individual possession of guns, which she said are the greatest causes of insecurity, destruction, suffering and domestic misshapes in Southern Sudan.

Ms. Disan stressed that guns take center point in most domestic misunderstandings.

Ms. Disan said women have resolved strategies and recommended that the government should regulate the possession of firearms by individuals in order to curb the misuse of guns in domestic disputes.

Over 400,000 illegal guns are in the hands of civil population of Eastern Equatoria state.

The illegal guns come from the Anyanya War, Ethiopia, Uganda, and acquired by civilians during the SPLA liberation struggle.
