The rally held by the President of the Republic and leader of the National Congress Party (NCP) in Rumbek yesterday witnessed an unprecedented turn up in what eye witnesses have described as the largest crowd ever witnessed in Rumbek.
Omar Hassan al-Bashir was received at Rumbek airport by Lakes State Caretaker Governor Telar Ring Deng amid a tight security apparatus, Radio Good News reported. However, a huge crowd filled up the main road leading to the Airport as well as the streets leading to the Lakes State Government Secretariat and Freedom Square where Mr. Al-Bashir addressed the huge gathering.
In this speech, Mr. Al Bashir reaffirmed his commitment to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. He however said he prefers the unity of Sudan at the referendum.
He added that one Sudan will be strong and it will be the best for all Sudanese across the country.
The NCP candidate to the top position in the republic urged people to put a stop to cattle rustling explaining that cows are meant for marriage and not for fighting through looting.
Mr. al-Bashir explained that it is better to use cows to marry more wives than killing each other.
Mr. Al Bashir also committed himself to fulfill promises he made four years ago when he last visited Rumbek in 2006, namely, to make possible education for everyone, to improve health facilities, to make better infrastructure in Lakes State.
He promised also to do something immediately to help the hungry.
Mr. Al-Bashir, who spent a couple of hours in Rumbek, was accompanied by South Sudan Democratic Forum member, Bona Malwal, his presidential Security Advisor Salah Gosh as well as the Director for National Intelligent Security Services (NISS), Majak Agot among others.
