The Undersecretary at GoSS ministry of Gender, Social Welfare and Religious Affairs has revealed that the number of women in the civil service has increased sharply compared to pre-CPA years.

The Interim Constitution of Southern Sudan allots to women twenty five percent of places in the civil service.

Peter Sukole Buni told the press yesterday at the Ministry in Juba that women have also increased in Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly to over forty and it had never happened before.

He added his ministry is trying to set up gender desks at ministry’s level to address women’s issues.

However, Mr. Sukore acknowledged that that the twenty five percent of the women’s share has not been fully filled.

He blamed it in the historical cultural hindrances that have shied women away from leadership positions.

Mr. Sukore acclaimed the governments’ efforts to increase girl child education which in future will increase the number of women in leadership.

He called upon women to refrain form cultural norms that hinder their participation in leadership.
