The United Nations-African Union joint peacekeeping mission in Darfur known as UNAMID has finally got the much needed and awaited for tactical helicopters.

Ethiopia supplied the Mission with five Mi-35P tactical helicopters that arrived yesterday in Nyala, South Darfur.

UNAMID Chief Ibrahim Gambari expressed deep appreciation to the Ethiopian government for its commitment, support and contributions towards peace and stability in Darfur.

Mr. Gambari added that the helicopters are critical for UNAMID to discharge its mandate to protect civilians and support the creation of a safe and secure environment.

With the tactical helicopters’ arrival UNAMID will now be able to reach many areas which had previously been inaccessible and answer quicker to emergencies in the region.
