Lakes state caretaker governor described the situation in Cueibet country, lakes state, as “deplorable” adding that its people live in “a very big humanitarian need”.
David Nok Marial appealed to the international community through the microphone of Radio Emmanuel to assist the Cueibet people who are lacking water, food, shelter and clothing, especially children, women and the elderly.He added that the town of Cueibet was devastated and residents live under the trees.
Mr. Nok confirmed that calm had returned to Cueibet, adding that the government deployed enough forces to guarantee security even for travellers.
He said the road between Rumbek and Wau was again open to traffic.
Fighting between SPLA soldiers and civilians erupted in Cueibet last Saturday when a group of youth invaded the army’s ammunition store.
A paramount chief, Jok Dau Kachuol was killed by a stray bullet.
The number of causalities remains speculative. The acting governor said 25 people had died.
However, Medical Director of Rumbek State Hospital, Dr. Chan Deng, said the Cueibet conflict has claimed at least 31 lives: seven soldiers and 24 civilians
He added that four of them died at Rumbek Hospital. They were among the 18 wounded taken there for treatment.
Members of the public have called Radio Good News appealing to the affected families to avoid any acts of revenge.
