The SPLM decision to expel members who decided to run for a political position as independent candidates last week was illegal because the Political Bureau does not have power to suspend senior party members, a party founder said.

Alfred Ladu Gore in one of the disowned independent candidates running for Central Equatoria governor against SPLM-elect incumbent Clement Wani Konga.

Mr. Gore told SCR News that the move to expel senior members running as independents from the SPLM is illegal.

He explained that according to the SPLM Constitution only the National Liberation Council has the power to expel prominent members.

Mr. Gore added that contrary to what SPLM Deputy Secretary General for the Southern sector Dr. Anne Itto said on TV last week, independent candidates are still full party members.

Mr. Gore, who is a funder of the SPLM, said the National Liberation Council has not been convened since the last National Convention.

He added that the statement expelling senior party members was baseless and made without following proper procedures.
