Officers from the newly formed Community Policing Department last Thursday confronted an armed gang in the very act of rape and shot one in the leg.
The police were on patrol in a village in Wulu, Lakes State, following a tip from members of the public.
The Police Unit Commander, Mangar Aping, told Radio Good News that the broad daylight incident involved a notorious gang of armed men who have been a threat to security in Wulu.
Mr. Aping added that the men were caught in the very act of raping women, among them a 14-year old girl.
He confirmed that the man shot in the leg was admitted in Rumbek Hospital, adding that he will appear in court in due time.
The Community Policing Unit has promised to crack down criminals in Lakes State with the cooperation of the public.
