Jersa Kide Barsaba, a member of the High Elections Committee and coordinator for the ten states, told SCR News that in Southern Sudan the total number of independent candidates for the post of MPs at various levels is equal to 312, while independent candidates contesting for the post of governors are 14.
Among the independent candidates, there are 23 women.Ms. Kide added that in democratic transformation the presence of independent candidates is allowed, though party regulations may stop them from belonging to the party.
Ms. Kide clarified that NEC is due to discuss financial support to parties although independent candidates will not have access to the funds.
According to the elections calendar, the period of campaign will last until April 9.
