The Supreme Court ruled yesterday that two more presidential candidates should stand in the elections to be held in April 11, including the first woman ever to contest for the top executive post in the country.

Fatima Abdel Mahmoud from the Sudanese Democratic Socialist Union told Reuters that the court has added her to the list of presidential candidates.

A crowd of ululating women greeted the candidate, shouting God is greatest and Fatima is Sudan’s next president.

Mrs. Mahmoud said this is a victory for Sudanese women that for the first time a lady will stand for the presidency of the republic.

The court also accepted an appeal by Munir Sheikh el-Din Jallab, of the New Democratic Nationalist Party.

The candidates to the presidency are now 12, including president Omar al Bashir.
