The magnitude of the crimes committed against women during post elections violence in Kenya must be recorded and prosecuted to prevent such gender violence from occurring again, advocates say.

ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo will be in Kenya gathering evidence for prosecution of those “most responsible” for the violence, CISA news agency reported.
The documentation project of violence against women during the post-elections period will be an important part of ensuring responsibility for gender-based crimes.

Patricia Nyaundi, executive director of the Federation of Women Lawyers Kenya, said there is no political intention to ensure perpetrators of gender-based and sexual violence are brought to book.

She added that by documenting these testimonies, women who underwent horrific ordeals are given a chance to tell their stories, to create historical evidence that actually happened.

Dr. Nyaundi concluded that this kind of evidence will force Kenya to move from denial and accept what happened during the period after the December 2007 elections.
