The UN inaugurated yesterday the site for its future headquarters in Southern Sudan outside Juba along the Yei road.
UN Special Representative for Sudan, Mr. Ashraf Qazi, attended the ceremony, which was hosted by the UNMIS Regional Coordinator for Southern Sudan, David Gressly.Dr. Luka Biong Deng, GoSS minister for Presidential Affairs, represented the Government of Southern Sudan.
Mr. Qazi said during the inauguration that the project reflects the UN’s long-term commitment to promote peace and economic development in southern Sudan.
Minister Biong praised the remarkable job that the UN has done in southern Sudan by giving hope and saving lives during the difficult times.
The United Nations House should be ready in June to host the main offices of UNMIS and a number of UN agencies.
Approximately 1,200 mostly civilian personnel will work at the new facility, and an estimated 600 staff members will move into residential quarters on the property towards the end of this year.
