Parishioners of St. Patrick Catholic church in Nimule are gripping in sorrow following last night’s accidental fire that gutted the temple and destroyed several items.

Fr. John Opi, a priest at the parish, told Radio Emmanuel that the fire started at around 7:45 PM and injured a female Catechist, burnt part of the tabernacle, the altar curtain, a roof section and some chairs.

The catechist was rushed a health facility for treatment as other parishioners hurried with water and sand to put off the fire and rescue property in the church.

Fr. Opi said the fire started accidently when the injured catechist was refuelling a kerosene lamp to be lit at the altar in the temple.

He added that some fuel spilt off the lamp and caught fire spreading to the curtain and the other areas.

Henry Drabuga, vice Chairman of the Parish Development Committee, said during the fire fighting rescuers were forced to break windows and doors to take out items from the church.
