Intertribal violence and disrespect for people with disabilities figure high in the list of violations of human rights in Southern Sudan.
This was the main conclusion of a meeting between the UN Independent Expert on the Human Rights Situation in the Sudan, Justice Mohamed Chande Othman, and members of civil society that took place in Juba yesterday.
Mr. Othman told the participants he wanted to know what the human rights situation in Southern Sudan was and what issues that concerned them most.
The participants singled out intertribal violence from cattle rustling and ethnic conflicts and the marginalization of people with disabilities as the main violations of human rights in Southern Sudan.
Other issues were access to education, hunger, police violence and unlawful detentions, and unpaid salaries especially to low rank civil servants.
Mr. Otman is in Sudan since Saturday in 17-day fact finding mission to the Sudan that is taking him to Darfur and the three special areas.
