The United States is worried about the flow of heavy weapons into southern Sudan to cause unrest ahead of the April elections, the U.S. envoy to the United Nations said yesterday.

U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice told reporters after a U.N. Security Council meeting on Sudan that the U.N. received information that weapons flowing into the region are not just small arms but also heavier ammunitions, Reuters reported.

Ms. Rice explained that more sophisticated and lethal weapons are used in the violence that is taking place in the South and that is a source of concern.

The US ambassador to the UN added that Washington believed some of the weapons are coming from northern Sudan and elsewhere.
