GoSS president has handed in this morning the documents to formalize his candidacy for the presidency of the Government of Southern Sudan at the Southern Sudan High Elections Committee in Juba.
Salva Kiir Mayardit told the huge crowd that accompanied him that the SPLM fought for democracy, equality and justice and citizens should not suspect the party of forging papers.Mr. Kiir explained that he stepped down from his military position in 2005 by a decree signed by late Dr. John Garang de Mabior.
He added that as GoSS president he is also the SPLA commander-in-chief like any president anywhere in the world.
Mr. Kiir explained that commander-in-chief is not a military post.
In the same occasion, Southern Sudan High Election Committee Chairman, Caesar Arkangelo Suleiman, told journalists that no other candidate has submitted an application for GoSS president.
Mr. Suleiman added that in two-days time the period for the submission of applications for executive or legislative candidacies at the April general elections will expire.
He explained that so far Mr. Kiir will be the only candidate for GoSS presidency and nobody else requested forms from his Committee.
Mr. Kiir was accompanied by Central Equatoria state governor Clement Wani Konga and a number of dignitaries.
The occasion was colored with several traditional dancers who escorted the candidate to the elections committee.
