Norway, UK and U.S. foreign policy chiefs issued a joint statement today congratulating the Sudan for the achievements of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and urging the peace partners to implement the remaining provisions to keep the CPA on track.

The document calls on all parties in Sudan to rise to the challenge with political will and vision through dialogue, cooperation, and political leadership.

The troika welcomed the progress made by political leaders in addressing critical and complex challenges over arrangements for the 2011 referendum on self-determination, the Abyei referendum, and popular consultations in Blue Nile and Southern Kordofan.

The statement added that elections in April and demarcation of the Abyei Area boundary and the North/South border are major challenges in the year ahead.

The troika asks the parties to begin discussions and negotiations on long-term issues that will arise irrespective of the referendum outcome like oil revenue-sharing, security arrangements, citizenship issues and many others.

It concludes with a call to equitable post-2011 arrangements to ensure lasting peace and regional stability.
