The 2006 Household Survey conducted by the health authorities in South Sudan indicates that the region has a very high mortality rate.

Dr. Olivia Lomoru is the Director General of Human Resource Health System Development, Planning and Research in GoSS Ministry of Health.

She explained to journalist today that the survey gave bad results: Southern Sudan has the highest maternal mortality rates worldwide (2054 women die out of 100 thousand at delivery or from birth related problems) and 135 children under five die in every 1000.

Dr. Lomoru added that other health hazards in Southern Sudan were water and sanitation, low vaccinations rates and low knowledge on HIV and AIDS.

She attributed the high mortality rate to a weak health system that does not address reproductive health issues and to the lack of hospitals, roads and other infrastructure.

Dr. Lomoru said that measures like motorcycle ambulances and health facilities in every payam will be put in place to help bring down mortality rate in the region.
