The agencies, led by UK’s Oxfam, published today a new report titled “Rescuing the Peace in Southern Sudan” ahead of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement’s fifth anniversary that occurs Saturday.
The briefing says the next 12 months will be critical for the future of Sudan while southern Sudan has seen a major upsurge in violence.
In 2009, some 2,500 people were killed and 350,000 fled their homes due to inter-tribal violence.
The documents adds that with elections and a referendum on the horizon, the CPA is fragile and the violence likely to escalate even further unless there is urgent international engagement.
The aid agencies urge the international community to address the critical emergency and development needs in Southern Sudan to protect the region from violence.
