Twenty five people have reportedly lost their lives in Akot, Lakes State, following a revenge confrontation between SPLA soldiers and civilians.
The bloody situation started when an SPLA official accompanied by his two body guards attempted to disarm a civilian herdsman on their way back to Yirol from Rumbek.

The civilian is said to have resisted and was shot dead, SCR News correspondent reported from Rumbek.

The family of the diseased went in pursuit of the SPLA official and his body guards, catching up with them in Akot, some 50 km from Rumbek.

Fighting broke out and four SPLA soldiers and one civilian died.

The confrontation between military and civilians restarted two days later, in the area of Akot and Makur Agar, and 13 SPLA soldiers and three civilians were killed.

Eighteen SPLA soldiers and seven civilians died so far in the retaliatory attacks.

The troops took over the centres of Akot and Makur Agar and most of the houses in these areas have been burned down.

GoSSS Minister for Internal Affairs, Gier Chuang Aluong, arrived today in Rumbek to try to calm the situation down.

Mr. Chuang travelled to Akot with some Lakes State officials to meet the SPLA soldiers and seek a way out.
