The lack of demarcation of the 1956 border between the north and the south remains a major hurdle for the 2011 referendum exercise, an official said.
James Wani Igga is the speaker of Southern Sudan Assembly. He told the congregation at the English Mass in Juba’s Saint Theresa’s Cathedral yesterday that the definition of the border between North and South Sudan is a major challenge in the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
Mr. Wani said the borders of southern Sudan have to be marked in order to get ready for the 2011 referendum.
He added that the Referendum Act is not enough for the exercise to take place.
Mr. Wani said the SPLM will mobilize citizens to take to the streets for another peaceful demonstration if the issue of border demarcation is not resolved quickly.
Mr. Wani made these comments while briefing the congregation on the current political situation in the country during the New Year’s Mass at Juba’s Catholic Cathedral.
