The United States welcomed the reported efforts made by Sudan and Chad to normalize relations following last week’s meeting between Sudanese Presidential Advisor Dr. Ghazi Salahuddin and Chadian Foreign Minister Moussa Faki.
Ian Kelly, spokesman for the US Department of State, said in a statement SCR News received today that the United States is encouraged by the decision of Sudan and Chad to implement their 2006 bilateral Security Protocol.He urged the parties to fulfil their commitments and set up an appropriate and effective border monitoring mechanism as soon as possible.
The United States asked the Governments of Sudan and Chad to push forward with rapid implementation of the protocol.
Mr. Kelly said the meeting scheduled for January 7, 2010 in N’Djamena, Chad is a positive step toward implementation.
