GoSS president has called on the people of southern Sudan to refrain from shooting guns to welcome the New Year on Friday in an effort to maintain peace and calm on the first day of 2010.
On New Year’s Day a one-hour-long celebratory shooting took place all over Juba, killing and wounding innocent bystanders and spreading fear among residents.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit told the public today at Dr. John Garang de Mabior mausoleum that serious measures have been put in place to ensure that such horrible mistakes that led to the loss of lives do not happen again.

He added that the security personnel have been given all the necessary authority to deal with the culprits accordingly.

Five people including one child were reportedly killed by celebratory gunfire as New Year festivities got out of hand in Juba.

Officials said several people were wounded as the bullets fell to the ground over densely populated areas on January 1 2009.
