The Government of Southern Sudan has postponed the fifth annual celebrations for the Comprehensive Peace Agreement from its traditional day of January 9 to January 19 2010.

The chairperson of the celebrations preparatory committee, Dr. Luka Tombekana Monoja, who is also the GoSS minister of Cabinet Affairs, requested the postponement.

GoSS spokesperson Paul Mayom Akech said the decision allows enough time for the necessary preparations to make the celebrations a success.

The 2010 CPA anniversary celebration takes place in Yambio, the capital of Western Equatoria state.

SCR News was there three weeks ago and saw preparations were quite behind schedule.

The venue for the event, called locally the stadium, was just an enormous flattened square of land without anything substantial built on it yet.

Last year’s celebrations took place in Malakal and were marred by inter-tribal fighting.
