The sanitation condition in Yei prison is fast deteriorating amid an increasing number of inmates who face different criminal charges.
The Legal Aid Officer for South Sudan Law Society, Monday Helen, denounced the poor sanitation conditions during an interview with Yei’s Spirit FM.Ms Helen said inadequate sanitation conditions have led to an outbreak of skin diseases among prisoners.
She added the prison has a population of about 200 inmates including juveniles who are serving sentences between five and twelve months.
Most prisoners are serving sentences for offenses like fornication, adultery and theft.
Ms Helen expressed concern over a five-year sentence being served by one prisoner convicted by the payam court saying the punishment was beyond the jurisdiction of such a court.
Meanwhile, Yei Director of Prisons, Christo Alim, attributed the sanitation crisis to lack of financial support from the government.
He appealed to non-governmental organisations to provide support in order to reverse the current crisis.
