The Bishops of Sudan raised concern about mistreatment of Catholic Church property in Kapoeta County, Eastern Equatoria state.
The Bishops’ concern stems from a recent detention of the Kapoeta Catholic Parish priest when the cleric challenged the County authorities for deliberately destroying a fence and a nursery school on Catholic Church land.
Archbishop Paulino Lokudu Loro of Juba said the bishops learned during their stay in Torit for the annual plenary assembly that the Catholic Church is being mistreated in Kapoeta County.
Archbishop Lokudu emphasized that if the mistreatment is over land, the governor should intervene to bring sanity between the Church and Kapoeta County authorities.
Eastern Equatoria State governor, Aloisio Emor Ojetuk, confirmed the existence of a rift in Kapoeta County.
The governor promised to form a committee and to meet with the authorities in the diocese to find a transparent solution to the issue.
Mr. Ojetuk said that letters give an over exaggerated image of issues that might not be the reality, adding the church and the government are the same body.
