The US special envoy to the Sudan said the voter registration process represented a great start in the elections process.
Envoy Scott Gration made this statement during an official dinner with the GoSS president and other SPLM dignitaries yesterday in Juba.
However, he added that a lot still needs to be corrected in order for the elections to be transparent.
Mr. Gration also greeted the agreements that were signed between the National Congress Party and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement concerning the referenda and popular consultations draft bills.
Mr. Gration said the agreements demonstrated the political will and leadership needed to create a good political environment.
The Government of National Unity, chaired by president Omar Hassan Al-Bashir, unanimously approved on Sunday the draft bill of the Act on Referendum in South Sudan, the Act on Referendum in Abyei and the Act of People’s Consultation in South Kordofan and the Blue Nile.
The drafts are now in the National Assembly for discussion and approval before the session ends at the end of the month.
