The Minister of Health in the Government of National Unity (GoNU) said today that political commitment is key for the success of the second Sudan Household Health Survey that was launched today at Nyakuron Cultural Centre, in Juba.

Minister Tabitha Butrus told journalists that the success of the exercise depends more on political commitment than on funding.

Dr. Tabitha said that the survey is a joint effort between GoNU, GoSS and the UN agencies.

She added that the exercise is meant to yield data and information to plan better and to improve health services and social status in Sudan.

The First Sudan Household Health Survey was conducted in 2006.

The data collection process for the Second Sudan Household Health Survey is expected to start on February 1, 2010.

The survey is being conducted jointly by GoNU and the Central Bureau of Statistics in the North, and by GoSS and the Southern Sudan Centre for Census, Statistics and Evaluation, in the South.

The survey will cover key social development indicators including household characteristics, health and nutrition, water and sanitation, education and food security.

Two key modules on HIV AIDS and Maternal mortality will also be included in the survey.
