The United Nations Mission in the Sudan (UNMIS) applauded yesterday the peaceful manner in which the voter registration exercise was conducted throughout the country. The National Elections Commission concluded on 7 December the voter registration exercise for the April 2010 elections.

Unofficial figures released by the National Elections Commission put the turnout over 15 million voters, more than 75 percent of the nearly 21 million Sudanese citizens who were eligible to register.

Special representative of the UN Secretary-General for Sudan, Ashraf Jehangir Qazi, commended the National Elections Commission for launching the national exercise on time and extending it for an additional week.

Mr. Qazi said in a statement released by UNMIS that the completion of voter registration is a significant point of reference in the electoral process as the voters’ list is the basis for the elections.

Mr. Qazi also urged the Sudanese people to take part in the current Exhibition and Objection period which began on 10 December.

During this period, registered voters have the opportunity to confirm their names, registration number and other personal data on the voters’ list, request corrections if errors have been made, and object to the inclusion of any ineligible persons on the list.
