Assistance Parish Priest of St Peter and Paul Cathedral cautioned South Sudanese leaders against working for self-interest instead of the citizens they are serving.

Father Taban David preached that the country fought so hard to liberate itself from Arabs, but the leaders are working without considering the suffering of citizens, Radio Easter reports.

He regretted the fact that South Sudanese are staying in misery in IDP camps in their own country and refugees in neighouring countries.

“This country has been in mess since 1955. War people keep on fighting and we said the war that people fought for, was the war of liberation. We said we need to liberate ourselves from slavery. The Arabs have gone is there any peace realized in our country? Our leaders are so selfish. People who don’t sympathize with thousands of South Sudanese in refugee camp in different country. When you go to Juba, to Malakal in POC, there are thousands of South Sudanese in their own country. They stay in the camp. The war that we are fighting is the war for position for money which is not for liberation any more people need position and say minister can die but leave the position”, he pointed out.

Fr David urged South Sudan top leaders to imitate Khartoum crisis that was resolved recently instead of battling for positions in the government to work for the benefit of citizens.

“The Khartoum government had some mess for almost four months and later they sat on the table and say no if it is this one the problem, led us get it out, led us build peace we need peace we are all brothers and sisters this is our country, a country can’t go ahead when people are for positions, when people don’t see interest of the position”, he noted

“Can you stay in big position without support of local people because when you are climbing up there are people who are pushing you, but when you depress them the day you are falling everyone will run away to led suffer just because you are so selfish you don’t even look at the need of citizens, the need of the community and it is so sad”, Fr David added.

Fr Taban David advised civil servants to abolish corruption and tribalism to earn a good legacy for their children.

The priest made the remarks while preaching during the first Sunday of Advent at Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral on Sunday.
