Over two thousand households in Torit town including those for returnees have been affected by the weeklong heavy rainfall, flooding most of the areas.

A community member at Africa Boma in former Himodonge Payam told Radio Emmanuel that about one hundred and ten houses were destroyed.

Mike Ohitong says some community members affected by the floods have shifted to sleep at police station while others at school.

He urges the government to intervene to rescue the suffering population in the area.

“As you have seen, my house is full of water. We are suffering a lot. We are tired.  The flooding has destroyed a lot of our property. The food and flour that I bought for my children have all been destroyed. No place to sleep on. Our children are beaten by mosquitoes every day. They are already tired and sick. We call for help from the government to rescue us as soon as possible because there is a lot of rain. We don’t sleep. We put our children on our chest because of no place to put them on. Mothers are also tired because no place to prepare food. Our sorghum is rotten in side due to water. So we ask the government to rescue us”, Ohitong pleads the government.

Torit County Commissioner Fermo Peter Isarra confirms that at least one thousand nine hundred and eighty six households have been affected by the floods.

He regrets that the situation has left the population stranded and they have nowhere to stay.

The Commissioner appeals to humanitarian partners to rescue the population in his county.

He appeals for quick responds to rescue the people.

Torit State administrator for RRC, Emmanuel Okullo Eliseo also reports that heavy rains destroyed 50 homes and killed 8 goats in Torit West County.

He says the exact figures from Torit County has not yet reached his office but says he plans for emergency meeting with partners to save the suffering population.

The speakers made the statement to Radio Emmanuel.
