The Norwegian Refugee Council or NRC is calling for the recent peace deal signed by the warring parties to deliver real change in South Sudan.

In a statement, NRC Country Director Rehana Zawar stresses that lasting peace is needed to prevent the humanitarian situation from worsening.

She welcomes the commitment by the conflicting parties to cease hostilities and ensure free and unhindered access to aid workers.

Mr Zawar calls on humanitarian organizations to operate effectively and safely to address the dire needs of the population.

She notes that humanitarian access in South Sudan is a constant issue as operations are hampered by insecurity and denial of access.

The Country Director has expressed disappointment that South Sudan is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be an aid worker.

Zawar says over 100 workers have been killed since 2013.

She warns that the humanitarian needs will continue to grow if aid organizations continue to face restrictions and conflict.

Zawar calls for safe and unhindered access for life-saving assistance to be delivered effectively.

She urges all parties to respect the ceasefire, protect civilians and ensure humanitarian organizations are able to carry out their life-saving work without any threat.
