A priest in the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio is urging both Christians and people in the government not to preach the word of God in their favour because all people are children of God.

Fr Bagare Matthew Tanga says many people misinterpret the word of Jesus which says “give to Caesar what belongs to him and to God what belongs to God” in their favour, Radio Anisa reports.

Jesus was not meaning to divide Christians from those in politics, but was teaching the people to respect those in power, he clarifies.

The priest cautions that if national leaders are doing right things and citizens disobey them, people commit sin because God gave them the authority.

Fr Matthew says if political leaders abuse their power by mistreating others the Church will intervene because all people belong to God.

He urges South Sudanese not to use their powers against others or divide themselves, but see themselves as God’s children.

The priest made the remark on Sunday during English service at St Mary Yambio Catholic Parish.
